Oxygen is essential for bodily functions, but under certain circumstances it can also cause damage. In this case, we speak of “free radicals”. Many diseases and inflammations are caused by free radicals that result from stress, pollution, chemicals, preservatives, UV rays, viruses and excessive exercise. In the body, an enzyme called SOD (superoxide dismutase) fights excess free radicals. This enzyme is originally present in the human body, but its function in the body decreases with age. The antioxidants contained in plants also have an effect against free radicals. Contrary to popular belief, however, low-molecular antioxidants have the property that they are difficult to absorb by the human body because they are bound (polymerized) in a chain-like structure.
