It is a natural plant with the scientific name Salicornia europaea that grows in seawater and under natural sunlight. It is said to be the plant from which spinach and okahijiki are derived. 

In Japan, near Abashiri on Hokkaido, you can see whole fields of this plant turning red in autumn.

It grows by absorbing seawater and therefore contains a high concentration of seawater minerals and enzymes. It is particularly rich in iron and fibre.
